Columbia Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Breathe better, sleep better, live better
Myofunctional therapy for lasting health
Struggling with breathing issues, jaw pain, or improper tongue posture? These are common signs of orofacial myofunctional disorders that can affect your oral and overall health.
Our oral myofunctional therapy program addresses these concerns with personalized treatments designed to improve muscle function, tongue posture, and airway health. By tackling the root cause of issues like sleep apnea, TMJ discomfort, or orthodontic relapse, we help you achieve better oral function and long-term wellness.
A key part of tongue tie treatment
Myofunctional therapy is an integral part of functional frenuloplasty, a modern and comprehensive approach to tongue tie release. Simply releasing the tongue without addressing muscle dysfunction can lead to incomplete results or reattachment.
Therapy is typically recommended before and after a tongue tie release to:
- Strengthen tongue and oral muscles
- Improve range of motion and coordination
- Support proper healing and function
- Prevent reattachment
- Maximize long-term results for speech, feeding, breathing, and growth
By combining tongue tie release with myofunctional therapy, we’re not just freeing the tongue — we’re restoring full function and setting the foundation for long-term health.
Our approach to myofunctional therapy
- Comprehensive evaluation: We start by understanding your symptoms, goals, and medical history to tailor a treatment plan that fits your needs. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we identify the underlying causes of dysfunction.
- Custom treatment plans: Each patient’s therapy is unique, designed to improve breathing, tongue placement, and muscle function while addressing long-term health benefits.
- Education and support: We empower patients with tools and exercises to practice at home, ensuring therapy integrates seamlessly into their routine for optimal results.
- Collaborative care: Our team works with other healthcare providers, such as orthodontists or ENT specialists, for a holistic approach to your wellness journey.
Collaborative Care
Our team partners closely with a wide range of healthcare providers — including orthodontists, ENT specialists, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), and therapists trained in Craniofacial Therapy (CFT) and Craniosacral Therapy (CST). We also collaborate with specialists who focus on fascia work and soft tissue health.
This multidisciplinary approach allows us to address not only dental and airway concerns but also muscular, neurological, and connective tissue factors that impact your overall oral and facial health. By working together, we create a comprehensive, holistic plan tailored to your unique needs, supporting optimal function, comfort, and wellness.

Who is a candidate for myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is typically recommended for children ages 4 and older as well as adults who experience issues related to oral muscle function. Ideal candidates include those who:
- Breathe primarily through their mouth rather than their nose
- Have difficulty with proper tongue posture or tongue thrusting habits
- Experience speech difficulties linked to tongue or oral muscle function
- Suffer from sleep-disordered breathing, snoring, or mild obstructive sleep apnea
- Have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or jaw tension
- Are undergoing or have had a tongue tie release (functional frenuloplasty) and need support to improve tongue mobility and muscle coordination
- Have orthodontic concerns related to oral muscle dysfunction or are at risk for orthodontic relapse (open bite or flair)
Myofunctional therapy helps retrain and strengthen the muscles involved in breathing, swallowing, and oral posture, supporting long-term oral health and overall well-being.
